Castle Cove

Castle Cove itself is a bit of a hidden gem. You will find fantastic value for money here as it continues to be discovered by those less familiar with the area. The name of the suburb comes from Innisfallen Castle (yes, an actual castle) that was built in 1903. The rich history of the area, however, dates back thousands of years with the Cammeraygal people of the Guringai nation and there are still places you can find rock carvings and cultural sites.

Much of Castle Cove was built by developers in the 1950s and was carefully planned to preserve the beauty of the land. Homes were designed to blend into the bushland as best they could.

Inside Castle Cove

  • Castle Cove is relaxed and peaceful. It is a fantastic location for families of all shapes and sizes. There is a close-knit community that largely stems from the school over generations binding young families with retirees that remain in the area having seen their children go to the school. You will also find second and third generations learning to swim at the local swimming school.

  • Despite being a quiet suburb, Castle Cove has almost everything you could need right there. There are two sets of shops with cafes, a dry cleaner, a doctor and dentist, swimming school, butcher, hairdresser, bottle shop and even a craft fruit pie store. It is also very close to the Chatswood East Woolworths and Tennis Cove tennis centre.

  • Castle Cove has a few bus options depending on where you are going:

    • 277 operates between Castle Cove and Chatswood on a constant loop.

    • 207 will take you to and from the City (or East Lindfield in the other direction) from several stops along Eastern Valley Way.

    • 209 will take you to and from Milsons Point via North Sydney (or East Lindfield in the other direction) from several stops along Eastern Valley Way.

    • 194 operates from St Ives to the City through Castle Cove

  • Castle Cove offers catchments to some of the best public schools in Sydney (and some would argue the best primary school).

    For Primary School (K-6):

    • Castle Cove Public School

    For High School (7-12):

    • Willoughby Girls High School

    • Killarney Heights High School

It is worth noting that Killarney Heights High School now offers a full French Immersion Program.

  • The most amazing hidden gems of Castle Cove would be the indigenous rock carvings and paintings. Even some people living in the suburb would be unaware they are even there. Beyond that, there are small parks with amazing views over Middle Harbour and bushwalking trails.

  • Castle Cove is very much a family suburb, and the demography reflects this with over 75% of households being families with an average of just under two children. There are also households of individuals and couples in much smaller numbers.

  • It is not unusual to see a variety of wildlife in Castle Cove (generally not near the shops). It is one of the few convenient areas in Sydney where you still may see wallabies and other small native animals.

It is not surprising, given the bushland throughout, that Castle Cove has large areas that are bushfire risk. It also has some issues with soil erosion and pollutants due to proximity to Middle Harbour.

Recently there have also been some issues with tree vandalism that are affecting local ecosystems and wildlife. It is important to note that this is a rich natural ecosystem the residents are living in, and you would be buying into this in full knowledge of your responsibilities to maintain it.

  • Family, family, family, and did we mention family? If you are raising a family, you will be hard pressed to find a better place to do it. You have one of the best primary schools in the country and it still holds its small community charm.

The value for money in Castle Cove is almost unmatched. Whilst it used not to be the most convenient place to be, it now has ample transport options and is well connected to everything you could possibly need. The thing is the market hasn’t seemed to catch up on that and you can still get unbelievable value for properties that would be anywhere from 10% - 40% more in nearby suburbs.
